Kamenstein 2-1/2-Quart Whisle Tea Kettle, Red Reviews
This review is from: Kamenstein 2-1/2-Quart Whisle Tea Kettle, Red (Kitchen)
This kettle lasted about a week in my house. The rumbling noise it makes while the water is heating up is like a freight train going through the house. Then...to add insult to injury, it doesn't whistle. I had to go out and buy another last night because the rumbling was just too much for me. I think that it's perhaps the quality or thickness of the material used. It is very thin, much lighter than any other kettle I've ever had...so that may be why it rumbles like that. It's pretty...but too loud for this girl. I couldn't take it, and ended up turning off the water sooner than I should have and got luke warm drinks out of it. Very disappointing tea kettle. Spend a little more money on your kettle. You'll be glad you did.

I bought this after my Kitchen-Aid kettle bit the dust. I really wanted a kettle that could whistle... well, this kettle gave me a very faint whistle the first time I used it, and every subsequent use after that, the kettle has been silent. Such a disappointment! Oddly enough, I think this kettle takes LONGER to boil water than my ceramic Kitchen-Aid. You also have to be careful when opening the spout so you don't get burned. If you want something that holds water, this kettle will not fail to please. Unfortunately, I had slightly higher expectations for a WHISTLING tea kettle. I strongly recommend spending a little more for better quality!

Don't buy this piece of junk. The bottom is so flimsy it buckles when placed on heat---soon the kettle is rocking back and forth until it wobbles right off the burner.

The Joyce Chen tea kettle is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a kettle with straight sides and a tall spout that wouldn't spew boiling water all over the stovetop. I needed a 3 quart capacity, and I did NOT want a whistle. This kettle is perfect for light duty use to heat water for beverages. The handle is high enough and stays cool so I don't have to use a pot holder to pour. It is stainless steel so it looks nice even after a month on our often-used stove. It is not a heavy gauge kettle but that's ok since we don't use it for extended periods. I would recommend a heavier gauge kettle if you plan to use it a great deal.

A sturdy and attractive tea kettle--but I thought because it was a "3 quart tea kettle" I could safely boil 3 quarts of water at once, which was what I was looking for.
Turns out the "fill line" inside the kettle restricts you to 1-3/4 quarts--not even -2- quarts--unless you want to fill it up beyond the line. Then you have to stand there and watch it until just before it gets to the boiling point, to avoid having it splash all over your stove and counter top. If you fill the kettle up to the very top, sure, it holds 3 quarts, but it then you'd have water all over the place if it boils before you snatch it off the burner.
Not a big enough deal to return it, but it's annoying--why not advertise the actual practical capacity, instead of the 'absolute' but unusable capacity? Or is there something about tea kettles I don't understand?

I bought this a few weeks ago because it had a simple design and the bottom wasn't curved (I noticed all the pretty kettles with curved bottoms had people complaining that the handle got hot, and all the highly rated kettles had flat bottoms). The handle does get quite warm on this if you have the flame on high and the kettle is full (i.e. heating for a while), but not hot enough to burn me. The whistle is not too loud which might be bad for some folks, but I actually prefer a quieter whistle. The button to open the spout is in a good spot and easy to use. All in all, good kettle. No problems yet, been using it a lot.

I used this about 3-4 times and it worked alright. The metal is pretty thin and it feels flimsy, but it got the job done. You definitely need a potholder to take it off the stove, the handle gets far too hot.
Finally, I just noticed that the plastic around the whistle is melting each time it heats up. This isn't because I've left it whistling for minutes on end. I'm usually pretty good at taking it off the stove quickly. Still, the plastic is all melty and deformed now.
Do yourself a favor and pay a few more bucks on something that's a bit higher quality.

Got one broken in the box, so Amazon sent another, also with a broken handle. Finally gave up and got a much nicer OXO. Not worth the headache, just splurge a little and get a nicer one.
